(Make sure that the problem is not with a particular DVD disc)

We can isolate this problem by following certain steps:

We need to make sure that the Transfer mode of IDE controller is set to DMA.

Press and hold Windows key and break key to open System Properties window.

Select Hardware tab and click on Device Manager.

Click on "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers in Device Manager.

Select the Properties option by right clicking on Secondary IDE controller and click on Advanced Settings.

Check in Device 0 and Device 1, if the mode is DMA mode, if it is in PIO only mode change it to DMA.

Click OK and close Device Manager.

Also uninstall the IDE drivers. Double click on Secondary IDE controller, select Drivers tab and select Uninstall.

If prompted to restart the computer, restart your computer and the operating system will redetect the drive and will automatically reinstall the drivers.

Check now if the DVD plays the video without any distortion.

The DVD video will be distorted even when the System Resources are low.

You can increase system resources by doing the following things.

1. Remove unwanted files or delete the unused applications.

2. Perform disk defragmentation using Disk Defragmenter.

Open Run window and type dfrg.msc and click on OK to open Disk Defragmenter.

3. Ensure that there is no Virus in your system.

Check now, if the DVD works without any issues.

If the issue still persists, reinstall or update new video drivers.

Open Device Manager and click on "+" sign next to Display adapters.

Right click on the display device and select Uninstall.

On restarting your system, the video drivers will be reinstalled automatically. Also update the drivers from your notebook support website.

Finally, if the video is still choppy, then this could be due to missing codecs and to isolate this issue install DVD decoders or the required plug-ins.

You can get a lot of codecs or decoders from the internet, please download the required one.

These are some of the steps that you can follow to isolate the problems with distorted video from DVD.
