When choosing a new desktop PC case for your computer, there are not many factors that come into play. But there are a few factors, and they are extremely important! After buying your new desktop PC case you don't want to realize that it's not the right size, which brings us to the first factor to investigate. When it comes to PC cases, size does matter!
Computer Cases come mostly in mid-tower size or a full-tower size, each depending on what hardware is running inside of them. Desktop PC cases also have different form factors; these describe the general layout of the case and the major components that fit into it. The major components that must match the correct size of the case are the power supply and the motherboard. However, usually when you purchase a new desktop PC case a power supply is provided, so it's not too much to worry about. But not always so make sure your power supply dimensions match the size listed in the case requirements. If you look at the specifications of your motherboard, you will see what form factor it matches up too (such as Micro ATX, BTX, LPX or Mini-LPX, NLX, etc. the most common now is ATX). When choosing a desktop PC case, make sure your power supply and motherboard are compatible! If not then your computer components will not be able to fit into the case, causing the computer not to perform correctly.
Also when purchasing your desktop PC case, make sure that there is a correct amount of drive bays needed for your hardware (meaning that if you have four cd-rom drives, make sure the case has at least four drive bays.) As well you will need to make sure that the case has the correct amount of internal drive bays to insert your hard drives.
All of the newer computer cases usually do, but just to make sure, check that it has front and rear USB ports! USB's are becoming more and more popular and almost all of the new electronics require USB slots, and you don't want to be stuck with the hassle reaching all the way to the back of the computer because it only has rear USB slots!
Speaking of hassle, that brings me to the next factor to discuss, SIZE! Always look at the dimensions of the case and make sure you have room for it on your desk. My first experience buying a new desktop PC case, I really underestimated the size and it barely fits on my desk. Make sure your case is large enough for your hardware (form factor) but small enough for your desk!
The last factor but certainly not the least is airflow (computer cooling). It gets hot in that thing! Your hardware needs a nice cold breeze to cool down. Computer Cases need large fans as well as large vents. Especially if you have some heavy duty hardware you're looking to run, you don't want it to overheat. Internal thermometers are a plus, so you can monitor the temperature inside your case. Dust also has a habit of building up on your hardware, causing it to perform slower, so make sure fans are pointing in the direction of a vent.
It may seem like a lot to worry about, but it's most definitely worth it! After only a few minutes of research you can order your very own new desktop PC case and have an exciting new appearance to your computer!
